  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

Recently on Antique Road Show a relative of the real Virginia brought to the show the actually newspaper article that printed herrelative's (Virginia's) letter to Santa, which each year thereafter became reprinted in publications around the world and read by the famous and not so famous each Christmas. The relative had many stories about Virginia's life throughout the years and documented evidence that she was the real Virginia.Lots of related artifacts, whch I forgot how much the artifacts were estimated to be worth, but it was a lot.
